UCLA Law Trained Attorneys in Agoura Hills

Agoura Hills straddles the LA/Ventura county line, and that creates a jurisdictional question most car accident victims never think about. Where your crash happened determines which courthouse hears your case, which judges you face, and which jury pool evaluates your claim. Filing in the wrong county costs you time and credibility. We sort this out on day one.

Curt Brown handles car accident cases across Agoura Hills and practices at both Chatsworth Courthouse and Ventura County Superior Court. He knows the procedural differences between the two and builds your case for the specific venue where it will be heard. That matters more than people think, because a case strategy that works in one courthouse may fall flat in another.

A local attorney, not a remote firm

Knows the 101/Kanan Corridor

I grew up in Thousand Oaks, just east of Agoura Hills along the 101 corridor. I know the Kanan Road interchange, the Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon connection to the south, and the way this stretch of the 101 behaves at rush hour. Wood Ranch off Kanan is always a staple, and Ladyface Brewing was one of my favorite lunch spots before it sadly closed. I've represented injured residents across the Conejo Valley and adjacent communities throughout my career.

The County Line Problem and Other Local Details

Agoura Hills is LA County. Its neighbors are Ventura County. That one fact changes your courthouse, your jury pool, and your case strategy. Here is the full picture: roads, hospitals, laws, and deadlines.

Reyes Adobe Historical Site, Agoura Hills CAReyes Adobe Park, Agoura Hills CAThe Ridge shopping center, Agoura Hills CA
US-101 / Kanan Road interchange

The Kanan Road interchange on US-101 is one of the most collision-prone spots on this stretch of the freeway. High-speed merging, weaving traffic from Malibu Canyon-bound commuters, and limited deceleration distance create consistent crash patterns.

Where you go after a serious crash

Northridge Hospital (Level II Trauma) east on the 101, or Los Robles Regional (Level II) in Thousand Oaks. Agoura Hills is LA County, but Los Robles may be closer for west-side crashes. Critical cases go to UCLA Ronald Reagan (Level I).

California is a fault state

The driver who caused the accident is responsible for your damages. But insurers routinely fight liability and minimize payouts — especially when there is no attorney pushing back.

Statute of limitations: 2 years

California Code of Civil Procedure §335.1 gives you 2 years from the accident date to file a lawsuit. If a government vehicle was involved, you may have as little as 6 months. Evidence disappears quickly — act now.

Before you call anyone

Most Firms Will Take Your Case.
Few Will Actually Fight For It.

From the moment a claim is filed, the other side is building a case against yours. Adjusters document inconsistencies, make early offers designed to be accepted, and count on injured people to take less than they deserve. Most personal injury firms respond by loading up their docket: you get assigned to a paralegal, your calls go unanswered, and your case settles fast because the firm needs to move on.

We built L&F Brown differently.

  • You talk to a founding partner. Not intake staff, not a junior associate. A UCLA Law-trained senior attorney who handles your case personally from first call to resolution.
  • We limit our caseload on purpose. More cases means less attention. We take fewer so every client gets the time and resources their case actually requires.
  • We don't settle until the number is right. Insurance companies know which firms fold early. We're not one of them, and they know it.

Evidence fades. Deadlines are real. The sooner you have an attorney building your case, the better your position. This is our personal commitment to every client we take on.

What Shapes an Injury Case Here

Despite its Conejo Valley identity, Agoura Hills is LA County. Cases file at Chatsworth Courthouse. That is the same courthouse as Woodland Hills and Calabasas, not the East County Courthouse in Ventura County where Thousand Oaks cases go. Getting this right at the outset matters for jury selection, venue strategy, and procedural deadlines.

Kanan Road to Malibu has blind curves, steep drops, and a documented history of serious crashes. When the road itself is a factor, whether it is poor signage, missing guardrails, or inadequate maintenance, Caltrans or LA County can be named as defendants. Government claims have a six-month notice deadline.

Weekend recreational traffic changes the crash dynamics on Kanan Road. Malibu-bound drivers who have never been on the road before take curves too fast and cross center lines. These out-of-area drivers create different negligence arguments than a local commuter crash.

The Agoura Road commercial strip has restaurants, retail, and services where the landlords and chain tenants carry real insurance but also fight every claim. Their adjusters know what they are doing.

Dangerous corridors

Where the Crashes Happen

Local road patterns determine what evidence we seek, which defendants we name, and how we frame fault. These are the corridors in Agoura Hills where crashes concentrate.

  • high
    US-101 (Kanan Road interchange)

One of the most dangerous interchanges on the 101 in the Conejo corridor. Merging conflicts, high-speed weaving, and Malibu-bound traffic create conditions for serious multi-vehicle crashes.

  • high
    Kanan Road

Major north-south arterial connecting US-101 to Kanan-Dume Road and Malibu. High speed, sharp curves south of the freeway, and mixed recreational/commuter use make this a high-risk corridor.

  • high
Las Virgenes Road (Agoura Hills section)

Mountain road connecting Agoura Hills to Malibu. Narrow lanes, curves, and high-speed traffic make this one of the more dangerous roads in the area for all road users.

  • moderate
    Agoura Road

Principal commercial arterial through Agoura Hills. High traffic volume near shopping centers and restaurants with frequent driveway and intersection conflicts.

  • moderate
    Cornell Road

Residential and park-access road with recreational pedestrian and cyclist traffic. Limited sight lines and speed differential with through traffic create collision risk.

Where the Crashes Happen

The Kanan Road interchange on the 101 is one of the worst spots on this stretch of the freeway. Drivers accelerating toward Malibu merge into commuter traffic that is already backed up. The deceleration distance is too short, and the result is a predictable pattern of rear-end and sideswipe collisions.

Kanan Road south of the freeway is the mountain road danger zone, particularly on weekends. Agoura Road is the commercial corridor with its own set of pedestrian and intersection incidents. Las Virgenes Road connects to Malibu Canyon and carries its own serious crash history. Cornell Road is quieter but still sees residential and cyclist collisions.

A recent Agoura Hills case involved a motorcyclist hit on Kanan by a weekend driver who crossed the center line. Another was a pedestrian struck at an unmarked crosswalk on Agoura Road where the city had denied a crosswalk request two years earlier. That denial became evidence in the case. Different facts, different defendants, different strategies.

We handle every case type separately

Cases We Handle

Agoura Hills car accidents often involve the 101 corridor and canyon road commuters. The terrain and traffic patterns here produce crashes that are different from typical suburban collisions.

Rear-End Collisions

The most common crash type — distracted driving, tailgating, and sudden stops in commuter traffic.

Head-On Collisions

Among the most deadly. Often occur on surface streets and canyon roads when a driver crosses the center line.

T-Bone / Side-Impact

Common at intersections when a driver runs a red light or fails to yield.

Hit-and-Run Accidents

Even if the at-fault driver fled, you may recover through your uninsured motorist (UM) coverage.

DUI Accidents

Impaired drivers may expose defendants to punitive damages in addition to actual losses.

Multi-Vehicle Pileups

Complex liability across multiple defendants — we identify every responsible party.

What you can recover

Compensation Available in Your Case

Whether your case files in LA County or Ventura County, the categories of compensation are the same under California law. Here is what you can recover.

Medical Expenses

Emergency care, surgery, specialist visits, and physical therapy. Agoura Hills crashes often involve high-speed impacts on the 101 or Kanan Road.

Lost Wages

Wages lost while recovering, plus long-term earnings impact if your injuries prevent you from returning to full capacity.

Pain & Suffering

Living with pain, struggling through daily activities, and the emotional aftermath of a serious collision. All of this is compensable.

Property Damage

Repair or replacement of your vehicle and any personal belongings destroyed in the crash.

Future Medical Costs

Canyon road crashes and freeway collisions in Agoura Hills can cause injuries that need years of treatment. We make sure future costs are covered.

Punitive Damages

DUI crashes or extreme recklessness on Kanan Road or Agoura Road can justify punitive damages beyond your compensatory claim.

How we help

What to Do After a Car Accident

Your actions in the hours after a collision directly affect your ability to recover compensation.

1

Call 911

LA County Sheriff's or CHP will respond depending on the location. A police report is your most important piece of initial evidence.

2

Seek medical attention immediately

Get to an ER the same day. Delayed treatment is the number one thing insurance companies use to challenge your injuries.

3

Document the scene

Take photos of all vehicles, road conditions, debris, and your injuries. If the crash involved a curve on Kanan or Las Virgenes, photograph the road geometry.

4

Do not admit fault

Keep conversation with the other driver to the bare minimum. Exchange information only.

5

Decline recorded statements

You are not required to give the other driver's insurer a statement. Don't do it without an attorney present.

6

Know your rights, California law

What Injury Victims Need to Know

What if I was partly at fault for the accident?
California's pure comparative negligence rule means you can still recover even if you share some of the blame. Your recovery is reduced by your percentage of fault. Insurers inflate your share of blame to reduce what they owe — having an attorney prevents this.
Should I accept the insurance company's first offer?
Almost never. First offers are designed to close claims quickly and cheaply, before the full extent of your injuries is known. Once you accept a settlement, you generally cannot seek additional compensation. Speak with an attorney first.
What if the other driver had no insurance?
California has one of the highest rates of uninsured drivers in the country — estimated at nearly 17%. Your own uninsured motorist (UM) coverage may compensate you. We help you access all available coverage.
How much does it cost to hire L&F Brown?
Nothing upfront. We handle car accident cases on a contingency fee basis — we only get paid when you do. Your initial consultation is free.
How long do I have to file a car accident claim in Agoura Hills, California?
Generally two years from the date of the accident under California Code of Civil Procedure §335.1. If a government entity is involved — such as a city vehicle or road maintenance failure on Kanan Road — the deadline may be as short as six months. Evidence disappears and witnesses' memories fade. Do not wait.
