UCLA Law Trained Attorneys in Woodland Hills

When a family member dies because someone else was careless, reckless, or negligent, California law gives certain surviving family members the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit under CCP Section 377.60. That includes a surviving spouse, domestic partner, children, and in some cases, anyone who was financially dependent on the person who died. A separate survival action under CCP Section 377.30 lets the estate recover damages the deceased person could have pursued if they had lived.

Arya handles these cases in Woodland Hills because families here deserve someone who will explain the process without rushing them. The insurance company on the other side is already building its defense. They are pulling records, interviewing witnesses, and preparing to minimize what they owe. You need someone doing the same thing on your side, and doing it right now.

A local attorney, not a remote firm

Born and Raised in Woodland Hills

I didn't just relocate here to open a law office. I grew up here. El Camino Real High School, UCLA Law School. I still live in Woodland Hills today, spending weekends biking and hiking in the Las Virgenes Canyons near Valley Circle and Victory, playing in a basketball league at Crunch Fitness off Shoup and Sherman Way. On a good night you'll find me at Local Peasant on Ventura. When I say I know this neighborhood, it's not a marketing line. It's literally where I grew up, and where I still live.

What Shapes an Injury Case Here

Every case starts with the same questions: which roads were involved, which hospital treated you, which court will hear it, and what deadlines apply. Here is what we already know about Woodland Hills cases before you even call.

Where you go after a serious crash

Paramedics route to Northridge Hospital (Level II Trauma) or Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills. West Hills Hospital is nearby but not a trauma center. Critical cases go to UCLA Ronald Reagan (Level I).

California Wrongful Death Statute — CCP §377.60

California law allows surviving spouses, children, and — in some cases — other dependents to file a civil wrongful death claim for the negligent, reckless, or intentional killing of a family member. This is a separate claim from any criminal prosecution.

Survival actions run alongside wrongful death

A survival action (CCP §377.30) allows the estate to recover damages the deceased could have claimed if they had survived — including pain and suffering experienced before death. Both claims can run simultaneously and are often pursued together.

Before you call anyone

Most Firms Will Take Your Case.
Few Will Actually Fight For It.

From the moment a claim is filed, the other side is building a case against yours. Adjusters document inconsistencies, make early offers designed to be accepted, and count on injured people to take less than they deserve. Most personal injury firms respond by loading up their docket: you get assigned to a paralegal, your calls go unanswered, and your case settles fast because the firm needs to move on.

We built L&F Brown differently.

  • You talk to a founding partner. Not intake staff, not a junior associate. A UCLA Law-trained senior attorney who handles your case personally from first call to resolution.
  • We limit our caseload on purpose. More cases means less attention. We take fewer so every client gets the time and resources their case actually requires.
  • We don't settle until the number is right. Insurance companies know which firms fold early. We're not one of them, and they know it.

Evidence fades. Deadlines are real. The sooner you have an attorney building your case, the better your position. This is our personal commitment to every client we take on.

What Makes Your Injury Case Different

Westfield Topanga and The Village are two of the highest-traffic retail complexes in the West Valley. If you were hurt at either one, you are not dealing with a mom-and-pop landlord. These are corporate properties with professional claims teams who contest everything. Getting the property's prior incident history before it gets buried is part of how we build these cases.

Warner Center is full of offices and commercial buildings, which is actually good news if you were hurt there. These businesses carry real insurance, not the state minimum. That means there is more money available to cover your injuries than you would see in a typical residential case.

Crashes on Topanga Canyon Blvd are a different animal. When road design or poor maintenance contributes to a collision, Caltrans or LA County can be named as defendants. But government claims come with strict notice deadlines. Miss them and your case is dead, even if the road was clearly at fault.

Everything from this area files at Chatsworth Courthouse. We have tried cases there. We know the judges and we know what West Valley juries expect.

Dangerous corridors

Where the Crashes Happen

Local road patterns determine what evidence we seek, which defendants we name, and how we frame fault. These are the corridors in Woodland Hills where crashes concentrate.

  • high
    US-101 Ventura Freeway (Exits 24–32)

High-volume freeway with frequent rear-end and lane-change crashes, especially during morning and evening commute. The Topanga Canyon on-ramp forces sudden merges at speed.

  • high
Topanga Canyon Blvd (Woodland Hills section)

Narrow shoulders, blind curves, and steep grades. One of the more dangerous corridors in the West Valley for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

  • moderate
    Ventura Blvd (near Westfield Topanga)

Heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the mall, with frequent conflicts at access roads, crosswalks, and during peak shopping hours.

  • high
    SR-27 / Mulholland Drive interchange

Grade and sight-line issues create hazardous conditions. Limited shoulder space and high-speed approaches contribute to serious crashes.

  • moderate
Valley Circle Blvd & Victory Blvd

Intersection congestion near Warner Center creates unpredictable traffic patterns. T-bone and rear-end collisions are common during commute hours.

Where the Crashes Happen

The 101 through Woodland Hills is relentless during rush hour. The Topanga Canyon interchange forces drivers to merge at freeway speed into backed-up traffic, and the result is a steady stream of rear-end collisions. These are not low-speed bumps. We regularly see herniated discs, concussions, and soft tissue injuries that do not show up on imaging for weeks.

Topanga Canyon Boulevard has blind curves, steep grades, and narrow shoulders. Ventura Boulevard has the pedestrian density and distracted driving. De Soto and Valley Circle get the school zone and residential crashes. Each street has a different pattern and a different set of defendants.

We have represented people hit by rideshare drivers pulling illegal U-turns near Westfield Topanga, cyclists struck on Topanga Canyon, families in school zone collisions near El Camino Real, and pedestrians crossing at uncontrolled intersections on Ventura. The common thread is that these cases all required someone who could start working the same day.

We handle every case type separately

Cases We Handle

Wrongful death claims in Woodland Hills come from car crashes on the 101, medical errors at local hospitals, workplace incidents, and dangerous property conditions. Each one involves different defendants and different legal rules.

Negligent or impaired driving that causes a fatal crash — including DUI, distracted driving, and commercial carrier violations.

Workplace Fatalities

Third-party workplace deaths where a contractor, equipment manufacturer, or property owner's negligence caused the fatality.

Fatal surgical errors, misdiagnosis, and hospital negligence — subject to California's medical malpractice rules.

Dangerous Product Fatalities

Defective vehicles, equipment, and consumer products that fail catastrophically and cause fatal injuries.

Criminal Acts

Civil wrongful death claims can be filed against perpetrators of violent crimes regardless of criminal prosecution outcome.

What you can recover

Compensation Available in Your Case

California wrongful death damages are not limited to funeral expenses. The law recognizes the full scope of what your family has lost, financial and personal. Here is what is recoverable.

Funeral & Burial Expenses

All reasonable funeral, burial, and cremation costs your family has incurred because of this wrongful death.

Lost Financial Support

The income and financial support your loved one would have provided over their remaining working life. Many Woodland Hills families depend on two incomes to afford the West Hills area, and this loss is calculable.

Loss of Household Services

Cooking, childcare, home maintenance, and other daily contributions your loved one handled. We quantify what it costs to replace them.

Loss of Companionship

The love, guidance, and emotional support your family has permanently lost. California law recognizes this harm and puts a dollar value on it.

Pre-Death Pain & Suffering

Through a survival action, compensation for the pain and fear your loved one endured before passing. This is especially significant in 101 freeway crashes where victims survive the initial impact.

Punitive Damages

When death results from drunk driving, extreme recklessness, or intentional conduct, punitive damages punish the wrongdoer beyond compensatory amounts.

How we help

Steps for Wrongful Death Families

Wrongful death claims involve both legal process and profound personal grief. We guide families through both with discretion and determination.

1

Prioritize your family's wellbeing

Your family comes first. Legal steps can wait until you're ready. There is time to grieve before anything needs to be filed.

2

Preserve all documentation

Gather the death certificate, police reports, medical records, and any communications from insurance companies or the responsible party.

3

Do not accept any payment or release

Insurers sometimes approach Woodland Hills families quickly with lowball offers. Don't sign anything before talking to a lawyer.

4

Document financial dependence

Tax returns, pay stubs, mortgage contributions, and records showing how your family relied on your loved one's income.

5

Contact L&F Brown

Arya Firoozmand handles wrongful death cases with care and urgency. The 2-year statute of limitations applies, and evidence from 101 crashes or West Hills Hospital records must be preserved early.

What Injury Victims Need to Know

Who can file a wrongful death claim in California?
California CCP §377.60 permits wrongful death claims by surviving spouses or domestic partners, surviving children, and — if there are no surviving spouse/children — persons who would be entitled to the deceased's property by intestate succession (such as parents and siblings). Putative spouses and financially dependent stepchildren may also qualify in some circumstances.
Can I file a wrongful death claim even if there is a criminal case pending?
Yes. Civil wrongful death claims are entirely separate from criminal prosecution and proceed on a different standard of proof (preponderance of the evidence, not beyond a reasonable doubt). The criminal case outcome does not determine your civil claim — and in some cases, a civil claim succeeds even when a criminal case does not.
How long do I have to file a wrongful death claim in California?
Two years from the date of death under CCP §335.1. If a government entity was responsible, a Government Claims Act notice must be filed within six months. Preserving evidence — surveillance footage, event data recorders, witness accounts — is time-sensitive regardless of the legal deadline.
Where does a wrongful death claim from Woodland Hills get filed?
Wrongful death claims from Woodland Hills are typically filed in Los Angeles Superior Court or Ventura County Superior Court, depending on where the death-causing incident occurred. Cases arising from accidents on Topanga Canyon Boulevard or in Woodland Hills generally file in the appropriate local court. L&F Brown handles wrongful death cases throughout both jurisdictions.
